Trustees’ visit November 2017

Words from the Chair

The four Trustees will be visiting TCHC in November 2017. There will be the usual meeting with the TCHC management to receive updates and set strategic targets for the coming year 2018. We will also hold trustee meetings in preparation for the 2017 AGM. All this activity will be tinged with sadness as we will all be missing Chris Bendon who passed away at the start of 2017 – only weeks after returning from a very positive November visit to The Gambia.

It will be very interesting to discover the impact the newly elected government is having on the country – in particular to see if there is any likelihood of receiving any medical funding and support from government. Our last visit coincided with the elections and was a period of uncertainty but underlying optimism. This was followed in January by a period of greater uncertainty and turmoil when the defeated President refused to step down.

A degree of stability has prevailed since and now the key focus for TCHC is sustainability. This background of change and upheaval has been a challenge for trustees of the charity but especially for the staff working at the Centre. A key German medical charity unfortunately decided to withdraw its monthly financial support which has certainly left a hole in the Centre’s budget. However, and on a more positive note, despite this, we have managed to maintain our support transferring the same level of funding twice a year.

At our forthcoming meeting we will be discussing staffing levels, fee structures, financial procedures as well as exploring new ventures to secure the financial security of the Centre for its patients and staff.

The Trustees would very much like to thank all those who contributed to the collection for TCHC at Chris’ funeral in January 2017 and those who subsequently have made donations. A special mention for the ongoing support of St. John the Baptist RC church in Ilford; its regular twice yearly donation secures the salary of one SRN for one year providing an essential medical lead for the Centre.

Thank you for your interest,
